Pico Door Alarm Switch

Although this switch is designed as an automotive door alarm switch, it can be used for many other things. If the switch is mounted in a UL approved electric "box" to protect against an electrical fire, the switch could even be used for 110 volts. If the wiring is exposed, use for low-voltage applications only.

I use the switch to activate 12 volt indicator lamps throughout our house when the garage door is open. It is mounted at the top right of the door on the garage inside. When the door closes, a flat piece of metal screwed to the top/right of the door compresses the switch, disconnecting power going to the various indicator lamps. When the door is open, the switch button pops up, connecting the two wires attached to the screw terminals, completing the lighting loop. In other words, when the switch button is up, the switch is "on". When the button is down, it's off.

The burglar alarm type micro-mini reed switches previously used for my garage door application didn't last long because they were rated at far less than one amp. These Pico switches are rated at 10 amps.

The button only has to be pushed in about 1/3 of the way to open the switch. The spring pushing the switch button up has five pounds of resistance, which is quite a lot. The switch is 2-7/16" long, 7/8" wide, and 1 1/4" deep from the button tip to the back of the screw terminals. It's made in Taiwan and appears to be good quality.
